How to Apply Fertiliser Correctly Without Harming Plants

Why correct application matters

Fertiliser helps plants only when used correctly. Too much can “burn” roots and leaves, and too little does nothing. A few simple rules keep your plants healthy.

Follow the recommended dose

More is not better. Always follow the dose on the label for your plant and area. Over-fertilising is one of the most common ways gardeners damage their plants — stick to the recommended amount.

Water before and after

Apply fertiliser to moist (not dry) soil, and water again afterwards. This helps the nutrients dissolve and reach the roots, and reduces the risk of burning. Never apply heavy fertiliser to bone-dry soil.

Keep it off the leaves and stem

For granular fertiliser, spread it around the root zone, not piled against the stem or on the leaves, where it can scorch. Gently work it into the topsoil.

Feed at the right time

Feed during the growing season when plants are actively growing, not when they’re dormant. Most plants benefit from feeding through the warmer growing months.

Dilute liquid fertilisers properly

For liquid or water-soluble fertilisers, mix to the correct strength — too concentrated can burn. When unsure, slightly weaker and more frequent is safer than too strong.

Watch your plants

Yellowing or scorched leaf edges can signal over-feeding; pale, slow growth can mean under-feeding. Adjust based on how your plants respond.

Don’t fertilise stressed plants

Avoid feeding plants that are wilting, diseased, or newly transplanted and stressed. Let them recover first — fertiliser can worsen stress.
