Signs Your Plants Need Fertiliser (and What to Use)

Plants tell you when they’re hungry

Plants show clear signs when they’re short of nutrients. Learning to read them helps you feed at the right time with the right fertiliser — rather than guessing.

Pale or yellowing leaves

Yellowing leaves (especially older, lower ones) often signal a nitrogen deficiency. The plant lacks the nutrient for green, leafy growth. A nitrogen-rich fertiliser usually helps.

Slow or stunted growth

If a plant has stopped growing or stays small and weak despite good light and water, it may be short of nutrients overall. A balanced fertiliser can restart healthy growth.

Few or no flowers/fruit

Lots of leaves but no blooms or fruit often points to a need for phosphorus and potassium. A fertiliser with a higher P and K encourages flowering and fruiting.

Purple or reddish leaves

A purplish tinge, especially on younger plants, can indicate a phosphorus deficiency. A phosphorus-rich feed helps.

Weak stems and poor resilience

Floppy stems and plants that wilt or suffer in heat may lack potassium, which builds strength and stress resistance. A potassium boost helps toughen them up.

Brown leaf edges or spots

These can signal micronutrient deficiencies (or, sometimes, over-fertilising). A complete fertiliser with micronutrients often resolves genuine deficiencies.

But rule out other causes first

Yellowing and wilting can also come from over- or under-watering, pests, or disease. Check those first — fertiliser only fixes a nutrient problem, and over-feeding a stressed plant makes things worse.
