Understanding NPK: What Fertiliser Numbers Really Mean
What the three numbers mean
Every fertiliser shows three numbers, like 10-26-26 or 19-19-19. These are the NPK ratio — the percentages of the three main nutrients plants need: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K).
N — Nitrogen (leaves and growth)
Nitrogen drives green, leafy growth. A higher first number is great for lawns and leafy plants. Too little, and leaves turn pale and yellow; too much, and you get lots of leaves but few flowers.
P — Phosphorus (roots and flowers)
The middle number, phosphorus, supports strong roots, flowering, and fruiting. A higher P is good for flowering and fruiting plants and for helping new plants establish roots.
K — Potassium (overall health)
The last number, potassium, builds overall plant strength, disease resistance, and hardiness. It helps plants withstand stress, heat, and drought.
How to choose the ratio
- Lawns & leafy plants: higher N.
- Flowering & fruiting plants: higher P (and K).
- All-round feeding: a balanced ratio like 19-19-19.
Don’t forget micronutrients
Beyond NPK, plants also need small amounts of micronutrients (like iron, zinc, magnesium). Many quality fertilizers include these for complete nutrition.
